Cameras are precision instruments that require some TLC to continue functioning at their best. As with most things in life, prevention is better than the cure, so a little time spent maintaining the cleanliness of your equipment goes a long way towards keeping it working well in the long run. Take care of your equipment and it will take care of you.
For the most part, any camera requires the same attention in order to keep it clean but certain Fujifilm cameras have some nooks and crannies that can be hard to reach, so we’ll discuss some tools here for working those areas of the camera.
Tools of the trade
Before we tackle cleaning each piece of equipment, let’s take a look at a few useful tools that can make the job easier and more effective.
Microfibre cloths
Microfibre is one of those wonder materials that has really changed the way we clean so many things. When I work with Volvo Construction Equipment to photograph their excavators, the last step in preparing a machine for photography is cleaning the surface with a microfibre towel. When I clean the chain of my bicycle, I use a microfibre towel. When I clean my cameras and lenses, I use a microfibre cloth. They don’t last forever but they do a great job of pulling dust, fingerprints or leftover cleaning streaks off lenses, the EVF or the camera body as a whole.
