Iceland v Lanzarote: Similitudes and Differences Captured With the X100F

· 17.October.2023

Travelling is an experience that opens our eyes to different cultures, landscapes and atmospheres. Would you have ever imagined that two islands so distant and with such different climates as Lanzarote and Iceland could have many aspects in common? Diletta Pasini, an Italian photographer who lives in Lanzarote, reflects on the analogies between these two very distant lands, so similar in many aspects and exactly opposite in others, sharing photographs taken with her Fujifilm X100F.

Lanzarote is a small volcanic island of the Canary Islands, located off the coast of Africa, with a subtropical climate with mild winters and windy summers. The landscape of Lanzarote is wild, arid and dominated by imposing volcanoes with colours ranging from black to red.

Iceland, with its wild beauty and mystical atmosphere, is located near Greenland and has a subarctic climate, characterised by harsh winters and cool summers. Its landscape is also a mostly endless expanse of lava and imposing volcanoes but thanks to its cold and rainy climate, it’s much greener and also has majestic waterfalls, large lakes and enormous glaciers.

I have been living in Lanzarote for a few years now. I fell in love with this little island a long time ago, precisely because of its volcanic nature, which can be perceived in every corner. People think that it is very hot here with sunshine all year round but this is not really the case; for most of the year here it is very windy, the sky is often covered with thick clouds and when it rains, the whole island is coloured with a very intense green.

Visiting Iceland and its volcanic landscapes is a dream I’ve had since I was a child. Finally, this year I had the opportunity to reach the ‘land of ice and fire’ and I decided to take my Fujifilm X100F with me, which I have been shooting with since 2018 and always carry with me during my travels because it has never disappointed me.
