Fujifilm cameras, indeed cameras in general, are becoming increasingly complex and have settings and features that could take a lifetime to fully understand and utilise. A quick search of the internet for any one of these will return guides and tips for making the most of every little element available to you or which camera you need to buy in order to have exactly all the functions you might ever need at your fingertips for a very specific genre of photography.
In this article, I want to play the devil’s advocate for a moment and explore the idea that most of the functions a modern camera offers are well beyond the needs of most photographers most of the time. From the perspective of someone who makes thousands of images every week for a variety of different clients and personal work, I’d like to delve into what I think are the core functions worth understanding in our modern cameras.
Since I use several different Fujifilm cameras for the different work and play that I do, I will try to keep this as camera-agnostic as I can. While certain cameras have additional functionality or perhaps a different way to access specific functions, as a general rule, every Fujifilm camera has access to all of the basic functions we need to produce any image we want without restriction.
Many of the functions of our cameras are just set-and-forget for a specific way of working and others need to be adjusted depending on the situation. It is the latter that we’ll focus on here…
