Patrick Reilly is the winner of the October FujiLove Magazine photo assignment “Squares” (see the winning photograph above). I wanted to know more about Patrick and his work. Here comes my conversation with him!
Patrick, when did you start using the Fujifilm camera system and what are its features that you enjoy the most?
My first serious camera was a Nikkormat with a 50mm lens. I built a ”Darkroom” and taught myself to print. I still have the photography “fever” – I still use film with a Leica M6. My first Fujifilm camera was a Fuji J1645, a medium format camera with a fixed 60mm lens. The first Fujifilm digital camera I used was the X100S, then the X-T1. Fujifilm X-Pro2 is the camera I use today, together with 14mm, 18mm, 23mm, 35mm and 50mm lenses. I have two X-Pro2 bodies and with the 18mm on one, and the 35mm 1.4 on the other I am ”good to go” for a day of photography.
I have also added the excellent X100F – this is my go-everywhere-camera. The rangefinder style camera suits the the street / documentary / travel style of photography I enjoy the most. My heroes are Henri Cartier Bresson, Josef Koudelka, Andre Kertesz, and Alex Webb (for his colour work).
Could you share a story behind your winning image with FujiLove community?
It was taken in County Galway Ireland and it is a part of an ongoing project on many shops there are closing down. In Ireland small family-owned stores are a thing of the past. This was a store selling religious statues, rosary beads etc. When the elderly owner dies, the store dies as well…

Anything particular you would like to see coming from Fujifilm in the upcoming months and years?
What I really like about the X system is that I can switch from 3:2 ratio to 1:1 very easily. I shoot JPEG. I love the Acros and Classic Chrome film simulations. I think the Fuji system is “as good as it gets”, but I have no doubt they will keep introducing new features. The new X-Pro3 looks good.
